Simplify Sundays

Debbie McCuiston, self-proclaimed "Queen of Clutter-Free", does a segment for us each Sunday on simplifying our lives, getting rid of "clutter", and focusing on what's important.  We're really excited about this new segment - and hope you are too!  Take it away Debbie....

Well here we are three weeks into our promise to de-clutter our life. So, how's it working? By now most of our New Year's resolutions are slowly fading away. Life gets in the way and change is always hard. I would like to take a look at some of the reasons we are in the shape we are in. It doesn't matter if we have a few messy drawers in our home or if we live in a home that we have become a prisoner in. It didn't happen over night and it won't go away over night.

There are several reasons why we have clutter in our lives. The clutter may be things in our home, clutter in our minds or clutter on our bodies. They are all related. Once one area gets out of control it is very easy for the other areas to follow. We need to address why we have allowed the clutter to accumulate in our home, in our head or on our bodies. One of the major reasons is a control issue.  It may have started from a lack of control or that we need to be in control. It is time to take a few minutes to look around and decide why this has happened. If you grew up in a home that was run like a small army base, maybe you made a promise to yourself that you would never live that way when you grew up. So you went the opposite direction. It's time to find a middle ground. Maybe you grew up in a home that was so laid back, it seemed like you were in a coma at times. There may not have been a person that was the leader in your home so nothing was ever put away or finished. It's time to grow up and become the leader you need to be. Stop waiting for someone to come along and solve your problems and make it all disappear. It doesn't happen that way. Prince Charming is not coming to save the day or clean the house.   Don't let this slow you down.

Take a deep breath and let it go! It's time to start over and make a life for you and your family. Start where you are and get moving one area at a time. It is overwhelming!! You may not know where to start. Don't panic!!  Start in one room. I recommend you start in the room where you spend the most time.  This may be the living room, kitchen, or your bedroom. Get 4 boxes and label them in the following ways- Give away, throw away, sell items and put away. As you go through the clutter and you do not have a place to put something in that room, put it in one of these boxes. When one box gets full take that box to the proper place then...not tomorrow or next week. If you let it stay it will become part of the problem.  Remember to spend 30 minutes a day working one box at a time. Do not move to another area until you have finished the room you started. You can do this. It will take awhile but it will be worth it in the long run. You are worth the effort!! Do not give up! Keep working to become the person God created you to be. Make yourself proud.
