Simplify Sunday (5/23) Out With The Old Cosmetics!

Debby McCuiston, self-proclaimed "Queen of Clutter-Free", does a segment for us each Sunday on simplifying our lives, getting rid of "clutter", and focusing on what's important.  We're really love this weekly segment - and hope you will too!  Take it away Debby...

Ladies do you have a drawer full of makeup?
Do you know that most of the items in your makeup drawer have a shelf life of 3-6 months?
Only recently did I realized that I had some of my makeup for (brace yourself) maybe as long as 10 years! It wasn't until my daughter was gathering her stuff to move to her newly married life and we were dividing up all our makeup that I found cosmetics I didn't remember buying or wearing.  Between my fashion forward daughter and TLC's What Not to Wear, I have learned that the sparkly stuff on my eyes will make me look old. (Good to know  it's not my age, it's the sparkly blue eye shadow that is causing all these wrinkles).
I did find out that I can continue to wear eye liner. The problem is that it is hard to hold the magnifing mirror and try to put the liner on straight while trying to stretch your eye lid. It is very hard to draw a straight line with all the speed bumps on your eye lid. Although they say it will make my eyes look open when I use it, I'm  not sure it's worth all the trouble. After meeting an older lady that seemed to wear her eye liner instead of shadow, I am not sure that is the look I want to sport about town.
Now if you began wearing makeup anytime in the 60's you makeup of choice probably was Covergirl. That was about all we had to choose from. Oily or dry skin, and tan or no tan, were the only questions you had to think about. (And you used it until the bottle was empty!) Now there are so many choices you have to buy it from someone that has been "trained" to know your skin type. You also need to get your summer and winter colors. Gone are the days of buying our makeup at the local drugstore. Now you almost need a degree to pick the proper makeup for you skin type and you must take into account your age and probably your shoe size. (I guess the older you get, the thicker the plaster we must use to get that younger looking skin). I'm not sure what happened between the time I bought my first makeup and now, but it just doesn't cover like it use to. If you have makeup that you bought when you first started wearing it, let it go. I guess we need to start writing the date of purchase on the new stuff. I am not sure when it happened, but one morning (not too long ago) when I looked in the morning I saw a stanger looking back.
I can no longer wear sparkly stuff or the florescent lipstick anymore. When I was 16, I received my first tube of lipstick and it was shiny white.  (Only if you grew up in Fla will you think that this color was pretty) I thought I was so grown up. At the time I was very tan (before we knew tans could kill you) and that white lipstick could glow in the dark. When I walked in a room, it seemed like my lips entered first. I must say, the bright orange lipstick, that we just made my mother quit wearing, was a bit much even then. I have told my daughter, if I ever start wearing that shade of orange to shot me where I stand. (It was so UGLY!) The shelf life for lipstick is a couple of years. I guess you can keep it as long as you have the outfit that you bought it to match :)
Rule: Toss the lipstick when you toss the outfit.
So take some time to get rid of the old, out of date, way-past-it's-prime makeup. We need to understand that we do not look the same as we did 20 years ago. We can't dress like we used to, nor should we wear makeup like we did way back then. If you are blessed so you don't have to wear anything to make you look better, enjoy, you are one of the chosen few!  If you are like me, and know that there are some days that just aren't worth the trouble to put on makeup, enjoy, we have realized that sometimes it won't help!
This week treat yourself to something modern and something that makes you feel pretty.
No matter how we look or what we do or don't do to make ourselves look different on the outside, aren't we glad that God doesn't really care? He cares about our heart. Are you a person that gives of herself no matter if you get anything in return? If so, do you know that is what makes our Lord smile as He watches you give from your heart to others? Can you believe that all the outside things that we work so hard to make sure are perfect are nothing in God's eyes. I am so glad that the things the world looks at and values are nothing compared to the love that the Lord has for us. I want others to be able to see my heart - by the way I talk to others or the way I stop to help someone in need. I want to make a difference in the lives of those around me. I want to be able to stand up for someone that needs to be cared for.  I want to have enough time to stop and listen to those who are lonely. I don't want to do any of these things to make myself look better but because I want to see Jesus smile when He hears my name.
