Simplify Sundays

Debbie McCuiston, self-proclaimed "Queen of Clutter-Free", does a segment for us each Sunday on simplifying our lives, getting rid of "clutter", and focusing on what's important.  We're really excited about this new segment - and hope you are too!  Take it away Debbie....

Hope everyone has had a very productive week.  Hope you were able to clean out at least one drawer and keep it clean. The keeping it clean is the real test!!!  Congrats to the ladies that have made amazing progress in  tossing out "major clutter." I am very impressed! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

  This week I would like to take a look at the clutter that floats around in our heads. (Sorry I can't help with the voices that are in your head...that's a program for Dr. Phil.) Now if you are a mom or any woman that takes a breath every day, you know what I am talking about. Mine was usually the schedule of the darling hubby and all 15 kids (at least it felt like there are 15 some days. I really only had 2 kids to keep up with)...what to serve for all 21 meals this week and how to keep enough underwear clean for the WHOLE family all week. Just thinking about it gives me a headache.

As I have gotten older  I have made it a practice to keep as little information in my head as possible.  (If you are a friend of mine, do not leave a comment agreeing with this.)  In this day and time there is always somewhere you can find all the information you need at the click of a mouse. Why should I know it all anymore?--no one cares.  The way I solved the problem of scheduling is to keep a desk calendar hanging on the pantry door. As one of the kids would come in with their school calendar for band, football or any other activities, it went on the calendar. Everyone was given a color and their activity was coded that way. It was very easy to look at the calendar and decide how our week was to be directed. EVERYTHING went on the calendar...birthday parties, youth events, school stuff, even dad and mom's stuff was included. I also included the times that need to be alloted for each activity. That way I knew if we could fit more than one activity on that day.  It only took a few missed parties to make the kids realize that mom's rule "if it ain't on the calendar, it ain't happening" was the rule that we would live by. This may sound like a lot of work and the first time it will take a bit of time, but take my word for it you will be surprised at the amount of pressure it takes off of you and your over-taxed brain. It's all organized and very handy. I also kept a small calendar in my purse when I worked just in case someone had a question or needed to add to or take away from the week's activities.

Now that the kids are grown and married, we still keep the calendar. There aren't as many colors but we seem to be just as busy and it's just the 2 of us. It really has helped keep us from over-booking ourselves at times. We are now working on trying to schedule a Saturday every once in awhile as a "let's stay in our pj's, watch movies, screen our calls and eat junk food all day."  I will let you know how that works out.

This gives new meaning to the saying, "A place for everything and everything in its place."

Publix in the 1950's!!

I was hunting around for neat vintage shopping pictures (It's a hobby, I'm a dork) and I found this great old photo of a very early Publix Market!

If you look reeeaaally close - you can see that butter was 59¢ and "wieners" were 69¢ - I think it's pretty neat that we can still get those items at those prices today by using coupons!

CVS Coupon Policy & Walgreens Lack Thereof.

Recently, a reader on SouthernSavers sent in an email response they had received from CVS regarding coupon troubles.  The response from CVS was so helpful - that I just wanted to share the high points with you here!

• On a Buy One, Get One FREE item - YOU MAY use a BOGO coupon to get both items FREE!
• On a Buy One, Get One FREE item - YOU MAY use (2) MFR coupons!

Many people have trouble with their CVS stores varying on this point, including me!

• You may use Extra Care Bucks (ECBs) and coupons together to pay for an item.
• You may use a $5/$20 or similar coupons IN ADDITION to regular ECB's and Coupons. 
  
• Internet Printable Coupons are accepted, as long as the barcode scans.  If not - no deal.

NOW.  Go HERE and print off the original email and keep it in your coupon binder at all times!  If you should run into trouble, you will at least have some ammunition to press your point.

If you are new to couponing, you might not realize it yet, but this is a BIG DEAL.  Many stores were not prepared for the "Coupon Boom" and have either had to scramble to clarify their policies - or have simply left it up to individual store managers to do so.  This is especially a problem with Walgreens.  Let me illustrate - I posted these deals earlier in the week:

- Tinkerbell 69 wrote to say that the Chips Ahoy deal didn't print out any RR's.  My guess is that they found out little packs were working, and her store manager "fixed" it.  I have done this deal 6 times.

Other Examples of Inconsistencies:
☆ If you have a manufacturer's printable coupon with a Target logo on it - some Walgreens accept them, some do not.
☆ Some stores will not let you use a Walgreens coupon with a MFR coupon.
☆ A few Walgreens have made it so that if you use a coupon or a RR to buy a product - no RR will print out after your purchase.  How they did this, I don't know, but a few have!
☆ There is even a Walgreens in Georgia that has begun WRITING THE DATE on the RR so that customers can't come back and use them in the same day. (That is just insane.)

Go HERE to print out a 50¢/1 coupon for single-serve Coca-Cola products (It says CVS, but it's a MFR Q).  Bi-Lo has 32 Oz Powerades on sale for $1 this week.  This coupon starts with a 5, so it will double to $1 - making these FREE!

*You should be able to print (2) coupons per computer.

CVS Coke Coupon & Walgreens Extra Coupons

Sometimes websites like CVS.com & Walgreens.com will have store coupons you can print from their site.  For instance, CVS this week has a 50¢ Off Single Serve Coke Products & $1/1 Frito Lay Products on their site!

(Both of these are MFR Coupon, although they say "Redeem at CVS")

Just click the Checkbox that says "CLIP!" and print.  You should be able to go back and do 2 prints per computer.

 WALGREENS

Walgreens printable store coupons you can find by clicking on the "Weekly Ad" and they'll be over to your RIGHT.  They are entitled "EXTRA COUPONS". 

These are store coupons and are exactly like the coupons you find inside your ad, print *1* copy, and it will Deduct as many times as there are items.

*With Walgreens, make SURE to always give your MFR coupons first - store coupons last.  You will get less beeps, and more cheaps!

This is weird - I spent a few hours driving around town yesterday, running errands and listening to the radio, and found myself listening to Chantel Hobbs & Steve Reynolds (the "Bod for God" guy) talk about losing weight.  Something they both focused on was starting small - like substituting soft drinks with water.

So I decided to start that first change as of this morning, and right away I found 2 water deals!  Thanks God - I guess you want me to get healthier too!
